Suit Up and Get “Out Here”

By TheMusicVibes

Would Cosby Sweater by any other name sound as sweet? This Indianapolis funktronica trio began making crowds move back in 2012 under the name “Cosby Sweater” but when Bill Cosby starting making headlines for reasons that are in no way associated with the bands values, the members decided it was best to suit up and move on. Still creating a sound as vibrantly colorful as your favorite Coogi, musicians David Embry, Nicholas Gerlach and Jeff Peterson now perform under the less negatively-associated moniker “Turbo Suit”. So, returning to our previous question? Turbo Suit’s new album, Out Here, answers with a confident YES!

The trio takes their previous efforts up a notch with a 7 track LP sure to impress. Reflecting on concerts and festivals, you may notice funky jazz sets and electronica sets are pretty high up on the “getting people dancing” list. It’s no wonder, then, that the combination of these two genres comes out especially groovy. At its core, Embry handles production and vocals, Gerlach commands tenor saxophone and EWI and Peterson is on drums. Out Here impressively expands that lineup as the band welcomes some special guests. Zion I, ProbCause and Rusty Redenbacher are included as well as Trey Anastasio Band’s Natalie Cressman and Digital Tape Machine’s Joe Hettinga and Marcus Rezak. Joel Cummins, Jake Cinninger and Andy Farag also stop by to give the band some Umph! From start to finish, this album will make you dance- possibly your pants off since, according to Live for Live Music, the band is “continuing to soundtrack all of your sensual intergalactic-gangbang-dance-party needs.” If that’s not on your “needs” list, The Untz states more basically, “It’s easy to see why Turbo Suit is the next best thing in dance music.”

The cross-genre wonderfulness that is delivered on opening track Rewind, however, is likely to hook avid and casual dance fans alike. The song features Cressman, Redenbacher, Rezak, and Farag and makes you question if you’ve heard funky-jazz-soul-rap-funktronica before and if not, WHY NOT?! The uplifting vibe and cross genre pollination continues with the second track, Hourglass, this time with ProbCause and Rezak on the track. Run the Trap acknowledges third song, Coogi Wolf, as “a compelling, groovy track with some of the filthiest sounds you’ll hear this week.” The jazzy wolf in sheep’s clothing just might be the smooth horns bursting through electronica music in this one! Rewind 2 on track 4 invites Cinningar, Rezak, and Farag to take a new fast paced take on sounds heard in the opening track and leaves you with the satisfaction of winning your favorite childhood video game. Rezak sticks around for track five where he is joined by Hettinga for Wake Up which sounds like a voyage through space and funk. Zion I raps on Divine and the partnership of the artists sounds as is title then Joel Cummins and Rezak join in to give final track, Karate, some extra kick.
