Better Late Than Never! The Music Vibes catches the last of the Phish Late Nights featuring Particle w/ Fikus & Business Casual Disco

By TheMusicVibes

Lest I get stuck in the financially draining hustle-and-bustle that is Fall Tour in Atlantic City, I make the judicious move to catch the finale of the Post-Phish Late Night Run on Saturday November 2nd in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Easy on the ears and easy on the wallet, The Atlantic Club Casino aimed to please on Saturday night, offering a delicious three-course dessert show to those who enjoyed their preceding Phish dinner at Boardwalk Hall. The late nights were especially accommodating to those who didn’t succeed in the lottery and were left hungry for Phish’s New Year’s Eve run this coming December at Madison Square Garden.

To my dismay, I was unable to catch Business Casual Disco’s set. On the way to see them at The Atlantic Club, I was wooed in by the absolute captivating Three-Dimensional Projection show on Boardwalk Hall’s exterior wall.

Nonetheless, The Music Vibes and I will curiously look out for BCD shows to compensate for our absence. And curiosity may not kill the cat , since they collaboratively shared the late night event with Fikus, a five-piece “electro-funkadelic hip-rock” band from northern New Jersey.

As they bumped up the energy from low to maximum within the first song, simultaneously wowing the crowd with their nitty-gritty sound, the band’s energy spontaneously forced people to do a funky jitterbug, with both dance partners and the railing. It doesn’t seem like Fikus skipped a beat since I last caught them at their Club Chill set at this year’s Catskill Chill.

Particle put the icing on the cake with their set, which included Fikus members Jon Schmarak on trumpet and Pete Kozak on Percussion. Steve Molitz, while zapping the crowd with his tantalizing synthesizer, unknowingly spawned the name “Synth Jesus” among folks in the crowd during their rendition of Pink Floyd’s “Have A Cigar”.

Their music even went as far as boosting the economy of one bar in particular, as one happenin’ bartender was illuminated with the highest of energy from Particle’s set. Sustaining a perpetual groove throughout his shift, quite possibly transforming into one of the “Particle People”, he conducted a fan base of his own through his ecstatic appeal, as an abundance of thirsty people wanted to buy a drink from him.

There came a point in time at this show when I closed my eyes, zoned out and let the music play across my inner eyelids, almost to a synthesia-sense. Then, after five seconds, or ten years, I opened my eyes and connected with the actual human beings playing instruments on the stage, right in front of me. The feeling of manifesting sounds that defy run of the mill daily experiences partnered with the realization that they are being brought to you live by musicians is mind-blowing. There’s really no way for you to recreate this sensation other than seeing Particle perform for yourself!
