This week, August 8th, at The Blockley, get ready for an epic gathering of seasoned musicians as Bill Evan’s Soulgrass takes the stage. It is not often that one gets the chance to see a performance such as this, where talented musicians from several prominent groups band together to create a musical spectacle! Soulgrass is just how they sound, SOUL-GRASS; a unique fusion of soul, jazz and Americana.
The band consists of four-time grammy winner and saxophonist, Bill Evans, Ryan Cavanaugh on banjo, David Anderson of Blood, Sweat, and Tears on bass, Josh Dion on lead vocals and drums, Mitch Stein, who has played with several artists including Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, and the Steve Kimock Band, on guitar, and a guest on the Keys. Some of the most recent keyboardists have been Danny Louis from Gov’t Mule, Marco Benevento, John Medeski and Cyrus Madan from Deep Banana Blackout. Ryan Cavanaugh is a two-time Rocky Grass Award winner who was referred to Evans by John McGloughlin and Bela Fleck. David Anderson has also performed with Art Garfunkel and Mitch Stein has been a guest performer with so many notable bands that you most likely can hear his guitar rifts in several songs on your mp3 player.
Soulgrass frequently performs with such names as John Medeski, Steve Kimock, Eric Krasno, Danny Louis, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge, John Popper and Jake Cinniger of Umphrey’s McGee. Bill Evans’ exceptional talent at the saxophone has lead him to recent collaborations with Blues Traveler, Umphrey’s McGee, Phil Lesh and Friends, Tedeschi Trucks Band and Widespread Panic. He also jams on a regular basis with Gov’t Mule and the Allman Brothers Band. Bill Evans appears with Miles Davis on one of the most iconic jazz records of the 21st century, Star People, and has also collaborated with musical legends such as Herbie Hancock, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, John McLaughlin, Mike Stern, Deniss Chambers, Dave Weckl and many other prominent musicians.
