Why not beat the heat and come chill with us in the beautiful Catskill Mountains from Sept. 6th-8th? How does weekend of relaxation, fresh produce and chilling with one of the most musically oriented families on the east coast sound? If this is something that appeals to you, head over to Camp Minglewood in Hancock, New York September 6-8th and join the Chillfam for this year’s Catskill Chill!
Enjoy the beautiful scenery of Camp Minglewood, which is conveniently located alongside a private lake in the western Catskill Mountains at 350 Bouchoux Brook Road in Hancock, NY, just a few miles from 97 South. The camp rests alongside the Delaware River near the Pennsylvania border, between Monticello and Binghamton, NY and only 120 miles from New York City. What better way is there to end the summer than with an intimate music festival that boasts a line-up filled with exceptional artists and bands! Just remember to bring your dancing shoes, because you will be on your feet from sunrise to sundown (and most likely until the next sunrise as well).
Catskill Chill is a unique festival. Instead of beginning on a Thursday, the music starts on Friday afternoon, catering to those who work Monday-Friday jobs. Although the parking lot and campground open at 9:00am on Friday, if you can’t get out of work for the afternoon sets, you’ll still be able to get to the Festival in time to see Lotus take the stage at 8:00pm. Preceding Lotus, prepare to “Enter the Dragon” through the music of Connecticut native, funk-jazz fusion band Kung Fu, then get groovy until the sun rises with Higher Organix.
Feel free to spend the early afternoon on Saturday and Sunday at 12:00pm taking yoga classes with Andrea Giacomozzi and Jamie Harris. The yoga program is directed by Melia Marzollo of Skybaby Studio. You’ll find them on the northwestern tennis courts, and in the event of rain, it will be moved indoors to a nearby studio. Andrea originated what has become known as the Agni Groove Yoga movement. In so doing, Andrea has made yoga more accessible to the world by passionately teaching not only the physical aspects and movements of yoga, but the spiritual side as well. Andrea is ecstatic about the path her yoga teaching has taken and proudly states, “I, Andrea Giacomozzi, started Agni Groove Yoga to bring yoga out into the world, planting the seeds of the teachings I cherish along the way. From the first days of my yoga teacher training, I imagined fusing two of my loves – yoga and live music. I have been lucky enough to bring this fusion to music festivals around New England.”
If yoga isn’t quite your cup of tea, than consider visiting the Open Mic Stage where you can actually become a part of the performance. If you or your friends are musicians, or if you’re just looking to listen to some Chillfam inspired music, stop by this stage on Saturday and Sunday afternoon from 12:30-2:00pm. No appointment necessary! At the Open Mic Stage you will join singer/songwriter host Dan Collins on stage for some afternoon acoustic music, and a chance to win an opportunity to play a song on one of the main stages. Also, remember to check out both the Farmers Market, which boasts local, fresh seasonal produce and the impressive artisan Vendor Village. The Chillfam’s version of the festival’s Shakedown Street. Need money? You won’t have to look to far, as there will be ATMs located on the concert grounds and at the main box office.
Whether you post up in one of Camp Minglewood’s cozy cabins, or their common or VIP campgrounds, or even in the RV area, get ready to experience the closeness of being a part of the Chillfam and share your passion for great music and dancing. If you can’t afford to buy a ticket, there is always the option of volunteering. The Volunteer Program for the 2013 Catskill Chill will consist of working either two 6-hour shifts or one 10-hour shift. Volunteer positions include Hospitality, Parking, and Cleanup. In exchange for being a part of the Catskill Chill Volunteer Team, you will receive a Catskill Chill volunteer t-shirt, first pick camping accommodations, Wednesday early entry, beverages and snacks while on shift and meals will be provided for those working a 10-hour shift.
Catskill Chill supports a happy and healthy environment and has a force of nature’s justice, the green team, on staff for this event. This team of caring and environmentally aware individuals will be handing out trash and recycling bags to all campers. There will also be trash and recycling centers strategically located throughout the camping and concert grounds. The Chillfam is all about going green and keeping the environment and camp clean. With this in mind they ask that everyone assist in this mission by disposing of all trash in the proper bins and pocketing/throwing out all cigarette butts.
With headliners including The Meter Men, Leo Nocentelli and George Porter Jr., Lotus, Galactic, Conspirator, Lettuce, Papadosio, Teal Leaf Green, Dopapod and Particle, you simply can’t go wrong! Catskill Chill is also proud to welcome back Lotus, who killed the Sunday night set at last year’s festival. You will also be able to experience the epic side-projects of the legendary funk-soul band, Soulive, including both The Alan Evans Trio and Eric Krasno’s Band. The Chillfam sure knows how to get funky – as they will be including sets from Galactic, Particle, Lettuce (as well as one of their break-off bands Shmeans & the Expanded Consciousness), and Kung Fu. Be sure to check out Sister Sparrow with lead female vocalist, Arleigh, who recently performed as the sole female artist at the Equifunk All Inclusive Music Festival in Pennsylvania. Conspirator also wowed the crowd at last year’s Catskill Chill.
Artists from Royal Family Records from FUNKsations such as Soulive and Lettuce as well as Break Science, grace the Chillfest in their alternate yet clearly still “royal” forms. This year’s festival has much in store for Royal Family fans, including Shmeeans & the Expanded Consciousness, The Alan Evans Trio, and the Eric Krasno Band. The co-founder and writer/drummer of Soulive, Alan Evans will play with his newest musical trio, the AE3’s. This band consists of Evans on drums, Beau Sasser on keys and Danny Mayer on the guitar and proves to be super groovy as they play deep, funky melodies in combination with powerful rhythm. Eric Krasno, Soulives renowned bassist will be playing with his newest musical creation, The Eric Krasno Band that features a spectacular group of musicians including members of the Dap Kings and The Warren Haynes Band accompanied by the vocals of Alecia Chakour. Then in a Lettuce/Break Science experimental spinoff entitled, Shmeeans & the Expanded Consciousness Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff joins forces with Break Science drummer, Adam Deitch, Bassist Chris Loflin and keyboardist Pete Levins to unveil an entire new chapter of the Royal Family collection.
Even Sunday’s line-up is nothing short of incredible. The Meter Men take the Stage at 9:00pm and the festival will be closing with a collaborative set including both Dopapod and Papadosio. Witnessing the genius of seasoned artist, George Porter Jr. play with Leo Nocentelli and special guest Page McConnell, who has played not only with the Funky Meters (and does presently), but also the great Warren Haynes and Gov’t Mule, is an experience of a lifetime, in itself! Dopapod will heat up the stage at 11:30pm followed by Papadosio playing their music movement at 12:45am. By the time 2:00am arrives, the crowd may need to bring their own fire extinguishers as the incomprehensible and astounding music of Dopapodosio will incinerate the stage and send sparks into the crowd, igniting them into dancing harder than they have ever danced in their life. It will be a truly unbelievable experience, so make sure you buy a ticket and witness it yourself.
There is no better way to spend one of the last weekends of the summer than at Camp Minglewood with the Chillfam. Come enjoy some healthy, fresh produce from the farmers market, relax with some yoga and meditation, make new friends, buy some really cool items from the artisan village, listen to amazing music, dance all day, dance all night, and most importantly, become a part of the ever-growing family of Catskill Chill! Friday September 6th through Sunday the 8th will be one of the weekends of the summer of 2013 that you will NEVER forget. The Chillfam will be here waiting for you, arms open wide ready to show you how to really chill out with good friends and some amazing music. The Music Vibes also hopes to see you there!
