The City of Leeds in Great Britain has a thriving music scene swarming with talented artists. Throughout history it has produced a multitude of notable bands and musicians. Leeds even has its own International Concert Season, which is the largest of it’s kind in the UK, boasting 200 events annually from September to May. Therefore, it is no surprise that a band as brilliant as The New Mastersounds holds roots in such a musically inclined metropolis.
Next Thursday, August 15th, The New Mastersounds will be rockin’ The Blockley with their British jazz-funk fusion! This performance is the official pre party of the band’s double-header at Equifunk: The All-Inclusive Music Festival that will take place in Equinunk, PA from August 16th-18th. This soul-jazz quartet puts their own unique spin on funk and rock, drawing inspiration from legendary artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy McGriff, and Lonnie Smith. The Meters, considered by many to be one of the forefathers of funk, have been one of the biggest influences on The New Mastersounds. By combining the earlier sounds of the Meters with their own unique style and flare, The New Mastersounds have been able to elicit the genuine soul out of the funk. Their energy and passion for music rivals that of such performers as Funkadelic and Herbie Hancock.
Critics have recently exclaimed that “…the energy of their playing is contagious: the band lets loose and exudes a true dirty, funky vibe.” If James Brown were to stumble into a wormhole transporting him into this day and age, I wouldn’t be surprised if I found him getting down to a band such as The New Mastersounds. Mr. Brown would just love the way they effortlessly weave the sounds of that good “old-school” dirty funk of the 70’s into soul. Danceable to say the least. The New Mastersounds have been able to add a shot or two of rock into that funky old soul, blend it together with some gritty beats, shake it all up in a musical tumbler, and then top it off by collaborating with various DJs and producers. A truly satisfying drink to say the least.
What can be better than getting down to some dirty beats, drinking cold brews, and soaking up the good vibes at a music festival in the scenic Pocono Mountains? Your dancing feet will thank you — that is, until the end of the weekend when they will be exhausted from all of the grooving. Once is definitely not enough, so after catching The New Mastersounds Official Equifunk Pre Party at The Blockley, be sure to make your way to Equifunk to catch their two headlining sets!
