This Friday, December 6, The Blockley has an auditory treat in store for those looking to start the weekend right! From opener WOLF! featuring Scott Metzger through Bernie Worrell Orchestra then Marco Benevento, these performers will heat up the season and help you dance away your weekday woes.
Guitarist Scott Metzger joins forces with bassist Jon Shaw and drummer Taylor Floreth to open the show as WOLF! Metzger has played with the likes of Anders Osborne, Stanton Moore, and Gov’t Mule so he is no stranger to welcoming a crowd.
Following Metzger’s guitar chops, the show will feature two key legends: Worrell and Benevento. You may be familiar with Bernie Worrell from his roles in headliners Parliament Funkadelic and Talking Heads, so you know it’s going to be a good show when Worrell’s supporting! The legendary keyboardist will be showcasing decades of musical mastery with his most recent ensemble, Bernie Worrell Orchestra, which he co-founded with drummer and bandleader Evan Taylor back in 2011. Bernie Worrell Orchestra released BWO is Landing this past July and will undoubtedly invade The Blockley with their full-bodied signature funk and synth sounds. Worrell and Taylor are joined by guitarists Andrew Kimball and Kyle Cadena, bassist Scott Hogan, percussionist Glen Fittin and sometimes a horn section. This set is sure to be snazzy, jazzy, and funky fun for all and the best part is the night will just be getting started.
Who better to lead you into the late-night hours than Marco Benevento?! Benevento has won over festival crowds, bar venue goers, and home listeners alike with his stellar piano abilities. Whether playing his own compositions, covering favorites at intimate bonfire sessions, or collaborating with some of the greatest, Benevento infuses his crowd with enough high energy and enthusiasm to bring some home. His most recent album, TigerFace, conjures a colorful mindset as he invites established musicians Matt Chamberlain, John McEntire, Barr, Dave Dreiwitz, Mike Gordon, Stuart Bogie, and Kalmia Traver to partake in conveying his vision. The 10-track album was recorded and produced by Tom Biller of Silversun Pickups and Bryce Goggin of Pavement. Though his piano work speaks volumes, TigerFace is the first of Benevento’s records to feature vocals, which are delivered by Rubblebucket’s Kalmia Traver on tracks “Limbs of a Pine” and “This Is How It Goes.” Watching Benevento’s euphoric key playing, one is invited to his happy place as he uses his refined abilities to explore and express his world. He will appear as a trio Friday, joined on stage this tour by bassist Dave Dreiwitz who’s played with Ween and Andy Borger who’s played drums for Tom Waits. You sure don’t want to miss this unique opportunity to see two key masters from two generations play back to back so get on down to The Blockley this friday!
