Aside from being drawn in by The Blockley’s naturally alluring vibe, I was definitely curious as to what a Zoogma actually was! When the band first took the stage on that Saturday night in September, a wave of curiosity and excitement swept over me, just like when I was a child. You know, that feeling you would get when you heard that a new wacky toy just hit the market, and you just had to try it out? Well, Saturday the 14th of September Zoogma swept the audience away just like the shiny new gadget you had drooled over for months . . . and boy-was their music fun to toy around with!
Zoogma consists of Brock Bowling on guitar and Matt Harris on drums, the two handle the live sequencing. The signature synth sounds are brought to you by Justin Hastings on guitar and Ryan Nall on bass. Zoogma has been touring extensively since their release of Recreational Vehicles in 2010, but the more recent release of Anthems for Androids a month prior to the show provided all the more reason to check out this quartet of musical masterminds, providing electronic bliss.
Their dynamic musical commodities made me feel like I was transcending through different colorful worlds, while the radiant dancing lights satisfied my wanderlust and sent me jammin’. Perpetually climactic, Zoogma is a group sure to please any crowd. Considering their diverse mix of jamtronica, shreddy guitar solos, mind bending synth work, and a dash of the wompy dupstep sound done right, I doubt you’ll see much of anyone giving a “thumbs down” at a Zoogma show. Equally as satisfying as their heavy, beat-oriented breakdowns is the extraordinarily clean style with which each song comes to a close.
The most notable moments of the show occurred when they busted out their originals featuring high energy breakdowns while overlaying hip hop songs, such as Jay Z’s “99 Problems.” One of my personal favorite parts of the night was when they played their rendition of “Starry Eyed” by Ellie Goulding. Remember when Run DMC and Aerosmith thought outside of their genre-boxes and produced the instant hit, “Walk This Way?” Well, the genius of mixing styles was in full blown sight and sound that night as Zoogma had the crowd dancing this way, that way, and all over! Zoogma certainly carried that spirit throughout the night and turned me into a brand new fan. I recommend the experience that is Zoogma to anyone ready to get down and dirty to a fresh new hybrid of electronic rock!
